DIY: Postpartum Sitz Bath, Perineum Rinse and Perineum Pads
This is a sweet blend of herbs to assist in speedy recovery. New mamas absolutely love the opportunity to sit in a bath (once the ok is received by Doc) and soak in the soreness-easing herbs. This is the latest blend I've been using and my postpartum clients love it. There's a few ways this single blend can be used (bath sitz, perineum rinse and perineum pads). Scroll on down to get the details. This is makes for an amazing gift for the new mama in your life.
2 parts Ladys Mantle (leaves, flowering stalks and/or roots)
1 part Comfrey Leaf
2 parts Witch Hazel (leaves and/or bark)
2 parts Plantain
2 parts Calendula
2 parts Yarrow
1 part Lavender
½ part Sea Salt
Place 1 cup of water and 4 Tbsp of the herbs in a small pot and bring to a boil.
As soon as the water boils, remove from heat and allow the herbs to steep for a few hours or overnight. In the morning, strain the flowers from the water and use water in a peri bottle to spritz over tissues a few times per day.
Keep the peri bottle in the refrigerator for the cooling effect.
POSTPARTUM SITZ BATH
First bring about 2-3 quarts of water to a boil. Next add 1 cup of herb combination to the water, stir in well and then remove from heat. Allow herbs to rest in water for 20 minutes.
Next, strain the herbs from the water and add the water to your shallow bath.
Soak in the bath daily for about 15-20 minutes.
*Enough of this herbal formula can be made for use in multiple baths.
Lay an unscented heavy flow menstrual pad in shallow bowl once the herbs have soaked and been strained, following Postpartum Bath Sitz instructions.
Steep for a few minutes, and then lift from water. Leave moist but not dripping wet. The pads are fragile at this point, so be gentle so as not to burst.
The pads can be placed back in the wrapper they came in, then placed in a plastic baggie, and left in the freezer.
**These are nice to prepare around week 32 and have in the freezer to use after delivery.
